Fear

Hey [FIRST NAME GOES HERE],

Yesterday’s email touched a nerve.

Several of you wrote to say things like:

  • “Wow. You’re right. This is a very impactful reel; it’s operating like an ear worm in my head right now.”
  • “Wow Cindy! I love this email and that reel! It says so much about mindset and our culture.”
  • “Such a good email and great reel!”

The message (in case you missed it) was this: Most of us are waiting for permission to act. We want someone to force our hand, to make what we dream about doing our only choice.

If you lose your job, that’s permission to start a business. If your partner cheats on you, that’s permission to leave. If your business model tanks, that’s permission to pivot in a new direction.

Here’s the thing though. You don’t need permission. You can just decide to make a change because you want to. No other reason is necessary or required.

Okay, Cindy, we get it. Mindset is important.

But you’re the systems gal. What does any of this have to do with systems?

Everything, my friend. Everything.

Because I have a system for getting past your fear in business, for overcoming the imposter syndrome that’s holding you back, for becoming the kind of person who finally launches that business and steps into the life she wants to live.

And it starts with simply speaking up.

Ask anyone who’s ever coached with me, whether privately, on a Q & A call, or even casually by email, and they will all tell you the same thing. When they ask, “What should I do first?” my answer is always this:

Create and publish more content. Loads of it. As much as you possibly can create. Hit the publish button every single day at least once.

You literally cannot spend too much time creating content.

It’s impossible to say too much, too often, in too many places. You cannot repeat yourself too many times. It will never be more than your audience needs to hear, and it will never (ever) annoy or irritate or piss off the person who most needs to hear it.

But here’s the bigger benefit that no one talks about:

Creating content strips away your fear to reveal your confidence.

It clarifies how you think. It solidifies your opinions. It gives you a stake in the ground from which everything else can grow.

Yes, content can attract an audience, expose you to new people, build your email list. All of that is true, and it’s a great reason to create more. There are sophisticated systems to leverage your content with that in mind.

But by far the biggest benefit is personal.

Creating content helps you find out who you really are and what you really believe, and embracing those beliefs is what makes you stand out. It’s what makes you, you. It separates you from everyone else in your niche, and that is how you build a personal brand.

I have a simple exercise to get you started.

There’s a trend I’m seeing right now where a content creator says, “Here are X things I’d tell you as a [field of expertise] if I wasn’t afraid of hurting your feelings.”

Your assignment today (if you’re brave enough) is to write your own version, based on your personal area of expertise.

What are five things you want people to know about parenting or frugality or branding or dating after divorce? Don’t hold back. Tell the truth, and plant your stake in the ground.

Then hit the publish button.
