Are you solving a problem you don’t have yet?

Are you solving a problem you don’t have yet?

Real talk here for a minute. I’ve studied the online business space for more than 18 years now, and here’s something that has never changed:

Every single person I talk to who is stuck in “getting ready to start” mode is hung up on solving a problem they don’t have yet.

  • The financial expert who won’t pitch an interview until she figures out how to segment and track the new email subscribers she might attract.
  • The career coach who puts off publishing his newsletter until he perfects a weekly format.
  • The teacher who hasn’t yet launched her first course, because she’s still searching for that perfect platform that will grow with her.

Here’s what I think is going on. They’re scared.

What’s really holding them back is fear, not the subscriber segmenting or the email format or even the platform choice. Those things are just handy excuses to avoid doing the real work for one more day, while still feeling like they’re making progress.

If you see yourself in any of these examples, or if you’re feeling stuck and can’t quite figure out how to get UNstuck, ask yourself this:

Am I trying to solve a problem I don’t have yet?

If you are, the fix is simple: Move forward. Take one step. The answers will reveal themselves out as you go.

There’s a scene from an Indiana Jones movie where he has to cross a gorge where there is no bridge. His guide encourages him to just take the first step, because by doing so, the next step will be revealed.

That works in any situation where you’re feeling stuck. Just take the first step. Pitch the interview. Send the newsletter. Create the course. Only when you take those first steps will the problem you think you have today sort itself out.

If you need extra help, a brainstorming partner, or some public accountability, Six-Figure Systems is here for you. Come join us. I’ll help you solve the real problems, so you can move forward on your business goals with confidence.

I’ll see you on the inside.

Knitters might recognize these terms: Startitis (being distracted by something new before finishing the current project) UFOs (unfinished objects, particularly those that have taken a back seat due to startitis) SABLE (stash acquired beyond life expectancy, which—when mixed with a dash of startitis—leads to UFOs) You’re not out of line if you’re sensing a similarity between knitters and solopreneurs. Simplify Read this post online instead. Not long ago, while scrolling through YouTube, I came across this video about a new feature in Notion. If you don’t know, I’ve been using Notion to manage the business off and on for years, and more seriously for the past several months. I’ve been slowly moving in my SOPs, my content calendar, my notes, my CRM, and I’m happy with the system I’ve built there. But that video threw a wrench in my plans. It reminded me that most apps prioritize new...
